Here are 10 facts about dogs that we didn’t know. They may not be helpful in the literal, practical sense, but they’re fun conversation-starters amongst fellow dog lovers. 1. If never neutered, a female dog, her mate and their puppies could produce over 66,000 dogs in six years! Wow!
2. The Norwegian Lundehund breed of dog has six toes (most dogs have four) and can close its ears.
3. On average, a city dog will live three years longer than a country dog.
4. Three dogs survived the sinking of the Titanic – a Newfoundland, a Pomeranian and a Pekinese.
5. A dog’s nose print is as unique as a human’s fingerprint.
6. The Cesky Terrier is widely believed to be the rarest of all dog breeds. According to some estimates, there are just 350 of these dogs in the world.
7. The bible mentions dogs 14 times.
8. According to the American Kennel Club, a dog’s sense of smell is over 100,000 times keener than a human’s, while its hearing is many times more acute (a dog can hear a rabbit’s heartbeat!). Its eyesight, however, is not as good as a human’s.
9. All dogs, regardless of breed, are anatomically identical, with 321 bones and 42 permanent teeth.
10. Dogs are thought to be descended from the Tomarctus, which lived some 10-15 million years ago.
