Rewarding your dog

Posted by: Tommy on 09 Oct 2009

It’s always good to reward your dog when he has performed well during training time. However, how do we know what kind of reward we should give them? There are a lot of different rewards we can choose …you can for example nicely scratch the dog behind his ears or you can give him some delicious doggy treats to nibble on. The most important thing is that you provide the treat immediately after he has done the desired behaviour.

One always welcomed reward is to spend some time playing with your pooch. Most dogs enjoy a game of tug-o-war or chase. Give the dog this reward as often as possible, because that can increase the bond between you and your animal. Simple things like taking a walk with you and getting your attention is at the top of most dogs’ favourite things to-do-list. Another great reward is to let your dog play with his favourite toy.

Another activity that dogs tend to love is the opportunity to run free and chase in a secure environment. Praise him and give him a treat every time his coming back to you and use freedom as a motivator to get him to stay or sit. An additional activity that’s even more coveted by pooches is swimming. Get your dog to do some obedience behaviours before allowing him to go into the water. Praise him when he comes out and comes to you. Another good reward is to let your dog dig, as a lot of dogs likes to dig. So if you want to make your dog happy just go out there and find a safe place where he can do some serious digging. And finally remember to give your dog a nice belly rub and tell him that you appreciate him when he’s being good.
