Be aware of Kangaroo’s if you take your dog near dams!!

Last month my sister’s staffy cross lab ( Scooby)  went for a walk as usual on their 12 acre property.  Scooby caught sight of a kangaroo and decided to chase it.  Next the Kangaroo headed for the dam ( to protect it’s self).  Despite attempts to get scooby away from the roo he chased it into the dam.  The kangaroo then proceeded to try and drown him.  If it wasn’t for my brother in law being there at the time throwing rocks into the dam to distract the roo, I have know doubt the roo would of drowned the dog.

Scooby went under and by some miracle Scooby managed to get away fromt he roo once the roo was distracted and  swim to the dam bank.  Scooby had many injuries that required several drainage tubes.

A couple of months on now scooby had recovered and was out on his first walk since the incident. My sister checked the dam area before hand and couldn’t see any roo’s at the time. However being the dog Scooby was of course he managed to chase two more roos.  My sister and brother inlaw called him and he began to back off but his instincts got the better of him….  He chased the roo back into the dam AGAIN!

This time Scooby wasn’t so lucky.  Unfortunately he drowned this time!   After two hours with  hook on a pole my sister managed to hook his collar as he lay on the bottom of the dam.  My sister sobbed as she dragged him out of the dam!

She felt responsible for his death, but Scooby loved to run and swim and she couldn’t deny him that right.  I truely believe that Scooby would of eventually run out of luck at some stage.

My biggest warning is to owners is to -

‘NEVER ATTEMPT TO ENTER DAM AFTER YOUR DOG’ -

I am so proud of my sister holding her self back from going in after him. When things like this happen sometimes people are not thinking straight and may make the wrong decision.  My sister said that this Kangaroo was massive and not evern rocks this time were diverting its attention……
