Dogs in the News

There’s a reason why we call dogs man’s best friend. They are loyal companions and our protectors, sometimes even willing to sacrifice their own life to protect the life of their owners. Here are four unbelievable stories about our favourite pets:

  1. In the Philippines an American Pit Bull Terrier, 4 year old “Chief,” saved his owner’s wife and granddaughter’s life, sacrificing his own by shielding them from the attack of a venomous snake. The snake was poising to strike but Chief bravely threw himself between the animal and the two women. He got bitten in the jaw and died minutes after the attack. Apparently the last thing Chief did before he let go was gaze up to his owner and wag his tail..
  2. “Indy,” the smallest and skinniest of the Edmonton Police Canine Unit earned himself a reputation after having single-handedly fought off a sex offender who was threatening a 43 year old woman with a hammer. The woman had called the police after a strange man had entered her apartment. By the time the police arrived the man had barricaded the door but one of the police officers managed to get the door to open just wide enough for Indy to squeeze through. Once inside Indy bit the attacker‘s leg and held him down until officers were able to get inside.
  3. “Lucky” and Flo,” two black Labrador sniffer dogs are the only two in the world trained to detect the scent of polycarbonate, a chemical used in optical discs (DVDs). And they use their unique talent to detect illegal, pirated and child-pornographic DVDs. The snouted duo has been so successful that the Malaysian crime syndicate has put an enormously high bounty on them.
  4. In Portugal, a man got arrested over an argument he had with two police officers. The man was walking his Pit Bull Terrier in a local park when the officers stopped him for not having a muzzle or a harness on his dog. The policemen politely asked him to put a harness on the dog, but the man refused and threatened to turn the dog loose upon them. The situation escalated, the man turned the dog lose, which ran away. When the police tried to subdue the man, he allegedly bit one of them on the wrist and leg! Now that’s what I call role swap!
