Elderly Newfoundland with “hotspots”

Hi

We have waged a continuing battle with a sore that suddlenly appears on our Newfoundland known as a hotspot – we have treated it by shaving the area and doing lots of beach swimming as soon as they appear – (if it looks infected they are treated with antibiotics). Does anyone know why this particular breed gets them? Our vet said it was a common problem with them.
