RIP Toby

The original Wonderdog has sadly passed away…

Dog Diaries readers will be saddened to hear the news that Dr Katrina Warren’s much-loved Border Collie, Toby, died a few weeks ago at the age of 14. Toby’s Facebook page has been inundated with messages of sympathy (with a special condolence page now set up).

Toby first captured the nation’s hearts when Dr Katrina chose him as a puppy on an episode of the popular children’s wildlife show, Totally Wild. His early life – everything from his first bath to vaccinations – was documented for the cameras, and as the adorably little fur ball grew, so did his fame, with Toby appearing on the cover of innumerable magazines.

Superstardom came for Toby when he – and Katrina – became stars of the popular Harry’s Practice. By now the most recognisable dog in Australia, Toby’s intelligence and showmanship captured a new generation of fans.

A tribute

Toby passed away peacefully in his sleep, and Dr Katrina has posted the following comment on her webpage:

For 14 years we were a team and our relationship was filled with unconditional love, trust and friendship. We had a special bond and right to the end he never failed to make me smile with his mischievous antics and sense of fun…

Another amazing quality Toby possessed was his ability to make others feel good.  From children in hospitals to the elderly in nursing homes, or simply playing in the park his beautiful temperament always shone through.

While I am deeply distressed by his passing, it is important to remember he lived an incredible, full life and he leaves so many wonderful memories. We must celebrate not only Toby’s extraordinary journey and his relationship with me, but all our furry-friends and the way they enrich our lives and make the world a better place.

Toby – you were my best friend and you will forever be in my heart.
