New Puppy: Introduction to Your Home

Bringing your new pup home is an exciting time for all. To guarantee a smooth transition, it is important to remain calm yet confident while introducing your puppy to its new surroundings. Here are some helpful tips to ensure you and your pup get off on the right paw!

It is important to keep this exciting transition as stress free as possible. Keep guests, other pets and distracting stimuli at bay until your pup had familiarised itself with your home. A quiet and relaxed environment is an ideal time for introducing new toys and bedding to your pup in its new home. And it’s never too early to start good habits! Establish food, water, and bedding locations for your pooch before arrival. This way, your pup can start to adjust to its new routine right away! I found this preparation helped calm both myself and my new pup.

Soon after arrival you should make sure both your house and yard are safe and secure for you new pooch. Once your pup is done exploring both the indoors and outdoors of his new home, this is a good time for a first meal. Try using food your puppy is already familiar with. The breeder or shelter where you  picked up your puppy from can typically give you helpful hints on the puppy’s diet.

Tired? I bet your pup is! Put your dog in the area you have already chosen as his or her new sleeping area. This ensures not only the beginning of another good habit but also a sound sleep for both of you. And a good rest is just what you need for the exciting days ahead!
