Getting a new puppy is an exciting time. Chances are though your other pet will not be jumping with joy by your side. The first meet and greet between your new pup and resident pooch is a crucial point in establishing a successful relationship and can be more than a little nerve racking for all involved. Fear not! While it may take some time, with the right encouragement, careful planning and these helpful hints, your two pups could become fast friends!

  • Preparation

Tidy up your house, particularly the area you have preselected to introduce the puppy to your dog. This includes removing potential conflict objects such as food bowls and favourite toys. In fact, a local park may be a better choice for a first introduction to avoid your dog becoming territorial. Regardless of the area, make sure you have a friend or family member available to handle your puppy while you introduce your dog

  • The Meeting

Many recommend using your dog’s preferred blanket or toy to familiarise your pup to the smell. Likewise, use the same method to prepare your dog for meeting the new addition to the family. Remember, first meetings do not always run smoothly but that this does not mean all is lost! Introduce your two pooches gradually. Use ample treats and encouragement to both dogs during their introduction. If there is tension or conflict, slow down and continue with praise and encouragement of both. If you remain calm and assertive, both dog and puppy will eventually follow your lead.

Placement and position during introduction is crucial. Do not hold your puppy, as this can increase its sense of feeling trapped and threatened. Instead stand assertively between both dogs while paying close attention to your dog and preventing them from bowling over your new pup. Introducing the two in a clean, spacious area will decrease tension and calm all parties.

Most importantly, remain patient and confident. Your two pups will most likely become fast buddies, all they need is time and love!
